Yago Soria is the Balearic photographer selected to participate with a solo exhibition project in the documentary photography festival Cortona On The Move 2026

The Institute of Balearic Studies (IEB), together with the organizers of the international photography festival Cortona On The Move 2026, offers a Balearic photographer to participate in the exhibition program of the festival, which is held from July 16 to November 1, 2026 in Cortona, Italy.

The international photography festival Cortona On The Move (https://www.cortonaonthemove.com) has been held since 2011 in the Tuscan town of Cortona, in the province of Arezzo. A protagonist of photographic production on an international level, the festival is a reference for photographers, curators, authors and critics, as well as for the general public. Under the managing directorship of Veronica Nicolardi and the artistic direction of Renata Ferri, the festival focuses on documentary narrative, specifically contemporary and socially relevant themes. At a time in history when photography is the most universal means of narrating the world we live in, the festival aims to make it accessible and understandable to the general public and turn it into a driving force for culture, exchange and growth. Every year, Cortona On The Move carries out research on the evolution of photographic language and increasingly privileges the production and realization of original and unpublished content.

To this end, the festival commissions a Balearic photographer to create and produce a photographic project, under the curatorship of Renata Ferri, who in 2026 has been appointed the new artistic director of the festival. The proposal is to create a new, original and unpublished project, related to the thematic focus proposed by the festival, which on this occasion is “Italy”.

The Evaluation Committee in charge of selecting the Balearic project was composed of Veronica Nicolardi, director of the Cortona On The Move festival; Renata Ferri, artistic director of the festival; Karen Müller, visual arts technician at the IEB; and Llorenç Perelló Rosselló, director of the IEB.

The selection process for the photographer was carried out in two phases, with a first phase in which Renata Ferri, artistic director of the festival, pre-selected three finalist candidates, to whom she proposed that they develop a brief proposal for a photographic project related to the theme of 2026. The three finalist candidates were Maite Cerdán, Juan David Cortés and Yago Soria.

In the second selection phase, the finalists presented their proposals on the theme of the festival. Of the three proposals presented, the evaluation committee selected the one that best fits the proposed theme and the planned exhibition schedule. The winning proposal was the project presented by Yago Soria.
