In the 2026 edition, Volverse un cuerpo de agua (Becoming a Body of Water), with the curatorship of Javier Sánchez Martínez and the participation of the artists Ana Laura Aláez and Gabriel Pericàs, has been the winning exhibition project of the open call that the Instituto de Estudios Baleáricos (IEB) launches every year to promote and give visibility in its ARCOmadrid stand to artistic creation in the field of visual arts of the Balearic Islands.
The proposal was selected by an evaluation committee composed of Pilar Cruz, curator; Sebastià Mascaró Cabrer, curator; Juan González de Riancho, gallerist; Karen Müller, head of the visual arts area of the IEB, and Llorenç Perelló, director of the IEB.
Becoming a body of water brings together several works by Aláez and Pericàs with the aim of deploying an alternative imaginary of the body. The origin of this imaginary is found in the cultural and social revolution that entails thinking that to live is to be inserted in a web of interdependencies with other beings with whom we not only share evolutionary ancestry and ways of being alive, but a collective destiny and a mutual vulnerability. This new ecological thinking also requires transforming individualism, anthropocentrism and the binary logic that governs our conception of corporeality.
